Steve Fleltham, 32, is Britain’s only full-time monster hunter. He gave up his job to live on the banks of Loch Ness, Scotland. He spends his time, camera and field glasses ready, watching for Nessie.

Six years ago I was living in the south of England. I was bored with my job. The older people there used to say, ‘(1) ____________ I was your age I always dreamt about going to Canada.’ I thought, ‘They have never lived their dreams. What am I doing about my dreams?’ The one thing I have always wanted to do is to find the Loch Ness monster. (2) ____________ I sold my house, bought the camper van and just came up to Scotland.

There is a shower in the van but it stopped working a long time ago. Now I usually get some water from the loch, heat it on my camping gas cooker and throw the water over me. Sometimes I only wash once a week, especially in the middle of winter. Last week it was –17.5ºC with 60cm of snow but I always light the fire inside the van and I’m usually warm, even in a T-shirt. In winter I normally sit in the passenger seat, with the radio on and the camera next to me. I can see everything on Loch Ness from the front window of the van. In summer I often sit in a deckchair beside the loch.

(3) ____________ –it was 11.00am- about half a kilometre away I saw this movement in the water. There was something travelling through the middle of the loch. It lasted about ten seconds. I didn’t get the camera in time. (4) ____________ I’ve never seen anything since (5) ____________. If I had electricity in the van I could keep the camera running all day. Unfortunately, I’ve only got batteries. Friends from the local villages usually re-charge my batteries for me.

I have made lots of friends since I came here. I always ask the local villagers if anybody has seen the monster recently. (6) ____________ that’s what makes me believe the story of the Loch Ness monster – all the friends who have seen it.
Letters always reach me here. Once I had a letter addressed to “Steve that lives in a van on the side of Loch Ness, and the number plate on his van is APR 5181”. Even that letter arrived. Some people send me socks or money with the letter.

I’ve got a little TV but I don’t often watch it. It uses too much battery power, so I only watch it about once a week. Fortunately I’ve got my radio which I enjoy listening to and, anyway, I like my quiet life here. Night on the loch is beautiful. In the roof of the van there are 2m-square skylights, one in the kitchen and one in the front where I make my bed. I lie in bed watching the stars and listening to the wind and the rain. I have never felt happier than I do now. Life is an absolute paradise.
